Fat Transfer Jackson MS
Our double board certified facial plastic surgeons, Dr. J. Randall Jordan and Dr. J. George Smith, perform fat transfer procedures for the residents of Jackson and surrounding communities in Mississippi.
Fat transfer is a technique where fat is removed from one area of the body and transferred to another, commonly the face. This procedure has been around for a long time, but has undergone resurgence in popularity in the last decade due to improved techniques. Fat would seem to be the ideal filler- using your own tissue to replace something that has been lost with aging. Unfortunately, the technique has been plagued with problems with loss of the transferred material over time.
Newer techniques may be able to provide better reliability however. Quite a bit has been written about the use of stem cells from the fat, and the effect of these cells on the skin itself. At this time it is too early to say what the final outcome of this research will be, but it appears to hold promise.
Fat Transfer procedure
Often carried out as a part of a facelift, the procedure is done under anesthesia in the operating room in this instance. Smaller volumes may be accomplished in an office setting with local anesthesia only. Fat is suctioned from the chosen donor site- usually the abdomen around the belly button area, sometimes the thighs or flanks, and injected into the area to be filled, such as the cheeks or lip area. The procedure is typically an outpatient procedure and if performed alone, takes less than an hour.
Fat transfer recovery
There is usually a fair amount of swelling and bruising with this procedure and it will typically last about 10 days. It is common for the replaced volume to continue to decline for several months and then begin to fill back in as the fat cells recover.
